Game News: Nintendo 3DS XL Announced

Nintendo announces new jumbo 3DS revision

Nintendo has announced a new 3DS hardware revision at its latest Nintendo Direct broadcast.
Simply named the Nintendo 3DS XL (or Nintendo 3DS LL in Japan), the system revision shares similarities to the Nintendo DSi XL/LL that was released in 2010.

The Nintendo 3DS XL comes in three colours. In Europe it will be Blue, Red and Silver while Japanese gamers can get White, Red and Black and Silver and Black. It features an increase in screen size to 90% larger than the original Nintendo 3DS' screen and features a longer battery life. Ranging from 3.5 to 6.5 hours for Nintendo 3DS software and 6 to 10 hours for Nintendo DS software, depending on the brightness of the system, 3D usage and other features.

The pixel density of the 3DS XL works out to be less of a significant decrease in ppi than the DSiXL was due to the 3DS' higher resolution screen meaning 3DS titles shouldn't suffer too much graphically from the jump in size.

Original 3DS: 132.15ppi
3DS XL: 95.59ppi
----------
Original DS: 106.67ppi
DS Lite: 102.56ppi
DSi: 98: 46ppi
DSi XL: 76.19ppi

Source: [en.wikipedia.org] & [pixeldensitycalculator.com]

The Nintendo 3DS XL will release simultaneously in Europe, for around £179.99, and in Japan on July 28th, and finally in North America on August 19th for $199.99

Nintendo Direct Pre E3 2012 Hardware Round Up

Once again gamers are calling in sick days, stocking up on snacks as they prepare for the years biggest gaming expo, where Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo hold conferences which are set to run over the next couple of days, as well as conferences being held by three of the largest publishers: Ubisoft, Konami and EA.

Nintendo have a lot to prove this year as they build up to the release of their next generation console the Nintendo Wii U which is set to hit retail in the 2012 Holiday period. Nintendo appear to have a plethora of information and announcements for this years E3 as they have ran a Pre E3 direct presentation to reveal new information about some of the Wii U's new hardware and software features.

 Hardware:

Wii U Tablet Controller:

Wii U Tablet Controller named Wii U Gamepad
Wii U Gamepad changed slightly from prototype seen in E3 2011
 - Slider pads changed to Analogue Sticks
 - NFC Chip on bottom left corner of Gamepad
 - Start & Select Buttons Moved to below the face buttons on right hand side
 - Gamepad longer and more comfortable to hold

Wii U Pro Controller announced:

This new, yet incredibly familiar looking controller, aimed at the 'hardcore' audience is intended for longer play sessions than using the Wii U's Game pad. Despite looking an awful lot like their rivals current generation controller, it could potentially be one of the best controllers out there featuring what appear to be good analogue triggers and that which the Xbox 360 controller lacked: a decent d-pad.

Sony have released a trailer and some new details about their upcoming arcade racer LittleBigPlanet Karting.

United Front Games are developers behind this project, which seems logical as they developed the Modnation Racers series which was already seen as the LittleBigPlanet of racers. UFG have said they will be putting as much time and effort into this as they did with Modnation Racers.

In Super Pokemon Rumble the player controls clockwork Pokémon toys (brought to life by a magical key), battling through various different levels in a top down dungeon crawler-esque fashion. The game adopts a simplistic approach with each of the players Pokémon exploiting one or two attacks against waves of opposing Pokémon. Every toy in the game has a power level which relates the their strength in combat as well as having up to two moves they can use. The opposing Pokemon have a chance of remaining on the battlefield after being defeated for the player to collect. Doing so will grant the player use of that particular Pokémon complete with a randomly assigned move set which more often than not renders them useless.

News: New iPad sells 3 million units

Earlier this week Apple released their weekend launch sales figures for the "New iPad". The New iPad moved 3 million units over in the first 3 days, The strongest iPad launch to date.

With a new quad core graphics processor, beautiful 2046x1536 resolution screen and other spec boosts the new iPad is looking to become even more of a gaming contender with new apps in the works to take advantage of the new high resolution screen, including a sequel to Epic Game's 2011 release, Infinity Blade II.

This is great news for Apple. The New iPad Outsold the iPad 2 and the Playstation Vita by over 2 million units and the 3ds by over 1.8 million units.

It seems looks like the New iPad is going to do extremely well which is no surprise as anything Apple releases seems to sell extremely well.

Game News: LittleBigPlanet Karting set for release this year

Sony have released a trailer and some new details about their upcoming arcade racer LittleBigPlanet Karting.

United Front Games are developers behind this project, which seems logical as they developed the Modnation Racers series which was already seen as the LittleBigPlanet of racers. UFG have said they will be putting as much time and effort into this as they did with Modnation Racers.

The game seems to be very similar to Mario Kart and Modnation Racers. With the usual racing modes and Multiplayer races and battle. There also seems to be a bunch of different mini games. One of the mini games shown in the trailer was throwing eggs into holes to score points. With a fully fledged track editor likely to outshine Modnation Racer's own editor.

Racers can fully customise their vehicles quite similar to Mario Kart 7. The vehicles are all made out of cardboard and have a nice look to them.

LittleBigPlanet Karting is shaping up to be a great little arcade racing game for PS3 (No news on vita release) and will be hitting shelves later this year.

Game News: Super Mario Galaxy 3 Unlikely

Fans of the highly acclaimed Super Mario Galaxy games are unlikely to see a third game in the series, says Nintendo.

Koichi Hayashida, the director of Super Mario Galaxy 2 claimed it's highly doubtful that there will be a sequel to Super Mario Galaxy 2. Hayashida states that the next big Mario game will most likely be an original concept, as most of the left over ideas from Super Mario Galaxy were used in its sequel.

“When we worked on Galaxy 1 we came up with a mountain of ideas. Of course, the ideas that made it in to the final product were the ones at the very top. Those ideas that were most compelling or could be implemented most easily and effectively. The other ideas were a little bit rougher. Ideas we weren’t positive that’d be as effective, or might have been much more difficult to include.”
“When you think about trying to make a game like Galaxy 2 from that large group of ideas that we had already decided were on the rough side, that becomes a very difficult project. The only way that we got through the development of Mario Galaxy 2 was by coming up with entirely new ideas. I think of that as a very challenging project when I look back on it.”
“From that perspective, to say we’d make another game using the ideas left over from Galaxy 2, it’s very difficult for me to imagine. I feel like we really did research the field very well for possible ideas and we used everything that was reasonably easy to implement.” - Koichi Hayashida
Let's hope Nintendo will announce the next big Mario game this June at E3.

Game News: Game UK is up for sale?

Strong rumours are floating around that Game have hired Rothschild (A financial advisory group) to find a potential buyer to buy off the company. This seems to be the case because Game are due to pay their landlord in two weeks and if they fail to pay in time there is a possibility of  the lose of 1000's of jobs According to The Sunday Times.

This wouldn't be a shock as Game has been struggling as of late. Especially after Game failing to stock the most anticipated game of the year Mass Effect 3 and a handful of other titles.

Reports last week say that the US retail gaming Juggernaut Gamestop (EB Games) are interested in purchasing Game.

Game issued a press statement last Sunday.
"Further to GAME's announcement of 29th February 2012 and recent press speculation, the Group confirms that it remains in discussions with its suppliers and lenders in relation to terms of trade that allow the business to operate within the facility provided by its banking syndicate, as announced on 3rd February 2012, and to meet its revised strategic plan. While these discussions are on-going, it has not been possible to source new products from a number of suppliers.

The Board of GAME is working actively to resolve these issues as quickly as possible. This includes on-going discussions with suppliers, seeking access to the original facility or alternative sources of funding, and reviewing the position of all of its assets in the UK and international territories.

It is uncertain whether any of the solutions currently being explored by the Board will be successful or will result in any value being attributed to the shares of the Company."
Game don't seem very confident that they will be able to overcome these issues. On top of this shares dropped below 1p, but have now risen and are sitting at 1.18p as we speak.

Will Game fight with the publishers to attain more stock. Or are the rumours true and are Game being sold to Gamestop? If Game are to close this would have a devastating affect on the UK games retail industry leaving it in the hands of the super markets.

Earlier this week, rumours were floating around, about Valve announcing a next-gen console to compete with the Wii U and Next Gen Playstation and Xbox. The marketing director of Valve, Doug Lombardi put these rumours to rest yesterday, confirming Valve aren't developing any hardware in the near future.

Kotaku columnist, Stephen Totilo, interviewed Doug about the possibilities of Valve ever making a Steam based hardware.

Totilo: "What you're saying is, there's definitely nothing coming any time soon, nothing at GDC or E3, but what you're not ruling out is the possibility that, hey, maybe some day Valve would make hardware,"

Doug: "I think that's accurate." (via Kotaku)

Will Valve ever enter the console market? And will they succeed? It's not an impossibility though it appears very implausible at this time with no Steam based hardware due in the near future.

Nintendo of America has revealed that the Nintendo 3DS has sold 4.5 million units in the United States in it's first year. The 3DS had a shaky start with a poor launch line up and high price. Nintendo were quick to fix the sale issues with a price drop just six months after launch. Sales then boomed and The launch of key titles such as Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario Land 3D also had a huge effect on sales over the holidays season.

The 3DS is close to doubling the original DS' first year sales. The original DS sold 2.3 million in it's first year. Unfortunately Nintendo are still expected to announce there first financial loss in 30 years at the end of the financial year.

 Assassin's Creed III Details

Earlier this week Ubisoft revealed the box-art for Assassin's Creed III. Depicting the protagonist moments before killing what looks to be a British solider, with an American flag in the background. This confirms the recent rumours of the game being set in the era of the American Revolution. The latest edition of Game Informer has the latest details about the game . There was way to much to go into huge details but let's just say it's looking like gamers will be seeing a very different Assassin's Creed game than they are used to in the previous titles in the series.
