Game News: Diablo 3 set for release in May



Blizzard have revealed that Diablo fans will get their hands on Diablo 3 on May 15th 2012.   Blizzard are allowing people to preorder and preload Diablo 3, exactly two months prior to release.


The World of Warcraft Annual Pass promotion is still running and will be running until 7:01 A.M. GMT on May 1st, 2012. The Annual Pass consists of buying a one year subscription of World of Warcraft and with this pass you will then receive a free digital copy of Diablo 3.

Game News: Super Mario Galaxy 3 Unlikely


Fans of the highly acclaimed Super Mario Galaxy games are unlikely to see a third game in the series, says Nintendo.


Koichi Hayashida, the director of Super Mario Galaxy 2 claimed it's highly doubtful that there will be a sequel to Super Mario Galaxy 2. Hayashida states that the next big Mario game will most likely be an original concept, as most of the left over ideas from Super Mario Galaxy were used in its sequel.

“When we worked on Galaxy 1 we came up with a mountain of ideas. Of course, the ideas that made it in to the final product were the ones at the very top. Those ideas that were most compelling or could be implemented most easily and effectively. The other ideas were a little bit rougher. Ideas we weren’t positive that’d be as effective, or might have been much more difficult to include.”
“When you think about trying to make a game like Galaxy 2 from that large group of ideas that we had already decided were on the rough side, that becomes a very difficult project. The only way that we got through the development of Mario Galaxy 2 was by coming up with entirely new ideas. I think of that as a very challenging project when I look back on it.”
“From that perspective, to say we’d make another game using the ideas left over from Galaxy 2, it’s very difficult for me to imagine. I feel like we really did research the field very well for possible ideas and we used everything that was reasonably easy to implement.” - Koichi Hayashida

Game News: Game UK is up for sale?

Strong rumours are floating around that Game have hired Rothschild (A financial advisory group) to find a potential buyer to buy off the company. This seems to be the case because Game are due to pay their landlord in two weeks and if they fail to pay in time there is a possibility of  the lose of 1000's of jobs According to The Sunday Times.


This wouldn't be a shock as Game has been struggling as of late. Especially after Game failing to stock the most anticipated game of the year Mass Effect 3 and a handful of other titles.


Reports last week say that the US retail gaming Juggernaut Gamestop (EB Games) are interested in purchasing Game.


Game issued a press statement last Sunday.
"Further to GAME's announcement of 29th February 2012 and recent press speculation, the Group confirms that it remains in discussions with its suppliers and lenders in relation to terms of trade that allow the business to operate within the facility provided by its banking syndicate, as announced on 3rd February 2012, and to meet its revised strategic plan. While these discussions are on-going, it has not been possible to source new products from a number of suppliers.


The Board of GAME is working actively to resolve these issues as quickly as possible. This includes on-going discussions with suppliers, seeking access to the original facility or alternative sources of funding, and reviewing the position of all of its assets in the UK and international territories.


It is uncertain whether any of the solutions currently being explored by the Board will be successful or will result in any value being attributed to the shares of the Company."
Game don't seem very confident that they will be able to overcome these issues. On top of this shares dropped below 1p, but have now risen and are sitting at 1.18p as we speak.


Will Game fight with the publishers to attain more stock. Or are the rumours true and are Game being sold to Gamestop? If Game are to close this would have a devastating affect on the UK games retail industry leaving it in the hands of the super markets.

The Assassin's Creed Website countdown timer has reached an end and with it has come a "Reveal Trailer" more commonly known as an announcement trailer.

Unfortunately the trailer doe not show any game-play footage although it does give the general idea on where the game will be set and what features will be available.

Will Valve ever enter the console market? And will they succeed? It's not an impossibility though it appears very implausible at this time with no Steam based hardware due in the near future.

Nintendo of America has revealed that the Nintendo 3DS has sold 4.5 million units in the United States in it's first year. The 3DS had a shaky start with a poor launch line up and high price. Nintendo were quick to fix the sale issues with a price drop just six months after launch. Sales then boomed and The launch of key titles such as Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario Land 3D also had a huge effect on sales over the holidays season.

The 3DS is close to doubling the original DS' first year sales. The original DS sold 2.3 million in it's first year. Unfortunately Nintendo are still expected to announce there first financial loss in 30 years at the end of the financial year.

 Assassin's Creed III Details 

 Earlier this week Ubisoft revealed the box-art for Assassin's Creed III. Depicting the protagonist moments before killing what looks to be a British solider, with an American flag in the background. This confirms the recent rumours of the game being set in the era of the American Revolution. The latest edition of Game Informer has the latest details about the game . There was way to much to go into huge details but let's just say it's looking like gamers will be seeing a very different Assassin's Creed game than they are used to in the previous titles in the series.

Game News: Rumours of a Valve engineered 'Steam-box' put to rest

Game News: Brand New SimCity Announced For 2013



EA have announced at the Games Developer Conference that the return of Maxis' Sim City franchise will return in 2013 with "SimCity" for PC and Mac.


“We’d like to thank the millions of fans who have helped make SimCity synonymous with the city-building genre. This is a franchise that means the world to us at Maxis and we’re happy to be bringing it back home where we are reimagining it for an entirely new generation of players.
Using our proprietary GlassBox Engine, SimCity for PC will equip players with the tools to play the most sophisticated simulation of its kind. We are dedicated to making sure the experience – no matter the platform – has the fun, flavor and playability that has been intrinsic to the franchise since its birth.” - Lucy Bradshaw, senior vice president at EA-owned Maxis, told attendees at the Games Developers Conference.
EA Origin has released the minimum system requirements for the game:

Game News: Gabe Newell is now a billionaire

The ever so friendly Gabe Newell seems to be worth a fair bit these days according to Forbes. Newell, co-founder and managing director of Valve Corporation is estimated to have a net worth of $1.5 billion. Forbes has ranked Newell as the 854th richest person in the world.


Newell couldn't have achieved so much if it wasn't for his extremely successful video game company Valve Corporation. Which last year skyrocketed. Valve's digital distribution platform Steam doubled sales for the seventh year in a row. As well as hitting 40 million users. Valve's big release last year, Portal 2, sold four million copies world wide in the first four months. Valve Corporation is now expected to be worth over $3 billion dollars.



 Valve has started to see increasing competition with Steam's main competitor being EA's Origin service, which has received a lot of flak from the community, and other services such as Good old Games, Direct-2-Drive and Desura. Digital distribution is becoming more and more popular in recent years with advances in internet technology resulting in faster speeds, making downloading multiple gigabyte games less tedious. 


Now if only Mr. Newell would reveal when Half Life 3 will be released.

Game News: Hitman Absolution & Max Payne 3 Cover Revealed

Earlier this week Square Enix unveiled their official cover art for their upcoming game Hitman: Absolution.


There is an ever so slight difference between the 360 and PS3 covers they both also have been cropped to allow space for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 logos, cutting off the top of the assassins head. None the less all three covers look interesting.




Hitman: Absolution is the fifth instalment of the Hitman series and is due to be released later this year.








With May being just around the corner, Rockstar have released the official cover art for Max Payne 3. The cover looks brilliant, with the sun in the background overlooking the city, of what seems to be São Paulo. Also shown on the cover is the protagonist Max, a terrorist and a female character that has yet to be identified.



Max Payne is set to hit shelves on the 18th of May for Europe and Australia and two days earlier in North America on May 16th. The PC release is set for May 18th in Australia, May 29th for North America and June 1st for Europe.

Game News: In Depth Look At The Assassin's Creed 3 Trailer


The Assassin's Creed Website countdown timer has reached an end and with it has come a "Reveal Trailer" more commonly known as an announcement trailer.


Unfortunately the trailer doe not show any gameplay footage although it does give the general idea on where the game will be set and what features will be available.

The trailers start with an Eagle soaring over Mohawk Valley towards a beautiful sunrise. The vast valley stretching for miles showing how large the game actually is. The valley is covered in a thick layer of snow.
A glimpse of the British flag and some dead bodies are shown lying in the snow with the morning sun beaming through the trees.

Flashbacks to the night before show a glimpse off an assassin hold an axe shaped as the Assassin's Creed logo.

This protagonist is no other than the assassin, Ratohnaké:ton, However he calls himself Connor. He is watching a group of British soldiers from a distance. 

Some glimpse of the fight between Connor and some British soldiers are shown. Connor use speed to his advantage and deals with the soldiers in a couple of seconds. He finish the final soldier off with a leap from above smashing him in the head with his axe.
 

After the flashback we see the dead British soldiers are getting ripped apart by a pack of wolves, confirming that there will be animals (hopefully similar to red dead redemption).

Connor is then seen running in the trees jumping from branch to branch. Similar to navigating the rooftops in the earlier games.

Connor suddenly stops and the camera pans out to view a huge battlefield.

George Washington is now seen commanding his troops into battle.
"The time is now near at hand which must determine whether Americans are to be free men or slaves! Our cruel and unrelenting enemy leaves us only the choice of brave resistance or the most abject submission. We have therefore resolved to conquer, or die."
 This is quite similar to a real George Washington quote.

 The American soldiers then start charging at the British as the Assassin's Creed 3 logo appears.
October 31st is plastered as the official release date for the Playstation 3 and the Xbox 360. PC owners will be disappointed to see the small text at the bottom saying "PC format release to be confirmed" sadly Ubisoft seem to be delaying the game for PC this is not a huge surprise though as they have delayed the game for PC users ever since the original game. Ubisoft has also confirmed Assassin's Creed III will be available on the Wii U before the 2012 Holiday Season.

Games News: Assassin's Creed III Details



If you head over to the Assassin's Creed Website you will notice there is a mysterious countdown timer. At 5pm GMT Monday afternoon (4am on Tuesday for Australian readers) we will find out what Ubisoft has in store for the latest upcoming Assassin's Creed title.




Earlier this week Ubisoft revealed the box-art for Assassin's Creed III. Depicting the protagonist moments before killing what looks to be a British solider, with an American flag in the background. This confirms the recent rumours of the game being set in the era of the American Revolution. The latest edition of Game Informer has the latest details about the game . There was way to much to go into huge details but let's just say it's looking like gamers will be seeing a very different Assassin's Creed game than they are used to in the previous titles in the series. 

Assassin's Creed 3 Details (via Gaming Bolt):

"- There will be brand new environments and all-new ways to exploit them to your advantage, according to the creative director Alex Hutchinson.

- The cinematic presentations will extend beyond combat into a complex way of storytelling. The game will have actually have the Mohawk language (Iroquois) in some scenes. Mohawk was one of the languages of the native Americans.

- The development cycle was the longest compared to any Assassin’s Creed game. It seems the game was developed simultaneously with the other spin-offs (Brotherhood and Revelations). According to Ubisoft’s CEO, AC3 has been in development for three years.

- The game tells a story of Templars vs Americans. It’s not about winning the war, but a story based on the main protagonist’s life.

- The game will feature a new camera, which focuses on the best possible view of the action.

- The game runs on a brand new version of the Anvil engine.



- The new Assassin is the son of a Native American woman and a British soldier. He calls himself Connor, but his birth name is Ratohnhaké:ton. Born into the Mohawk, he eventually crosses paths with the Assassins in his search for righteousness.

- Connor is quiet and stoic, letting actions speak for himself rather than conversing with others. In contrast to Ezio, Connor is a freedom fighter who acts in the name of justice rather than on personal revenge.

- Settings will include Boston, New York and a large countryside. The countryside will be the setting of about 1/3 of the game, and will be the location of many events during the game. The countryside will be about 1.5 times as big as Rome in Brotherhood.

- The protagonist will fight on the American side, with primary allies being George Washington, Benjamin Franklin and Charles Lee. However, this does not mean that the Americans are the good guys and the British are the bad guys. Templars are everywhere.

- There will be seasons in the game, meaning that the sun will shine during summer and the landscape will be covered in snow during winter. This is probably the best new feature in Assassin’s Creed 3.

- You can chain kills in the game using the tomahawk and the knife.



- Fighting and stealth will be completely redesigned, with Connor being compared to a “predator”. The player will be able to climb trees and other natural elements, and dual-wielding weapons such as a dagger and a tomahawk is now also an option.

- Animals will be present in the woods, like deer and bears. The player will be able to kill them and pelt their skins, to sell them later with the reformed economic system of the game.

- There will be puzzles similar to The Truth, only they will not be given by Subject 16.

- Desmond will go into the new Animus 3.0 and will find himself going into “significant events”.

- 100% sync in memories returns, though this time you will be rewarded when you complete memories to 100%. Checkpoints will also be introduced to mission replay, meaning you don’t have to replay an entire mission to get that 100% sync.

- The Brotherhood, or the Assassin’s Guild, will return in some form, albeit differently than we have seen before.

- Human shields are in, along with context sensitive actions. The target locking is gone, so the combat dynamics have changed.

- There is a fast travel system.



- There will be no more Mercenaries, Thieves, Courtesans, Romani or other factions, but there will be a replacement for them."


Assassin's Creed III is due to be released on the 30th of October 2012 in North America, with a Europen & Australian release expected for around the same time.

Music Feature: Audio Quality Subjective Opinion & Objective facts.



Audio quality is an interesting term, as it can be both a fact and a subjective opinion. CDs are very much still in mass production today, but with the advent of commercial goliath: Apple’s iTunes, and growing  rivals such as Spotify, hugely compressed .mp3 files have in many ways become the norm. Many people, and particularly the youth of today have grown to accept this as the best solution for piping music in to their ears, but the question is: are they right?
The recording and distribution of music has been through many different stages during the past half century: evolving from analogue recording methods like vinyl and cassette tape to digital CDs, DVDs and now Bluray.

“An analogue recording is one where a property or characteristic of a physical recording medium is made to vary in a manner analogous to the variations in air pressure of the original sound.” - Wikipedia

“A digital recording is produced by converting the physical properties of the original sound into a sequence of numbers, which can then be stored and read back for reproduction.” - Wikipedia

Both analogue and digital systems have limitations, and there is debate as to which is the best solution, but this a very extensive, ever on-going and open ended discussion that I don’t want to get in to with this article. The main point is that both of these methods are used in order to capture music in as a raw a form as possible. If the resulting product is then presented on a good enough sound system, it should be a near perfect reproduction of said original sounds.

The focus of this article will be digital media, and as such a breakdown of the key steps in producing such a recording is included below (courtesy of Wikipedia):

Recording
· The analogue signal is transmitted from the input device to an analogue-to-digital converter (ADC).
· The ADC converts this signal by repeatedly measuring the momentary level of the analogue (audio) wave and then assigning a binary number with a given quantity of bits (word length) to each measuring point.
· The frequency at which the ADC measures the level of the analogue wave is called the sample rate or sampling rate.
· A digital audio sample with a given word length represents the audio level at one moment.
· The longer the word length the more exact is the representation of the original audio wave.
· The higher the sampling rate the higher the upper cut-off frequency of the digitised audio signal.
· The ADC outputs a sequence of samples that make up a continuous stream of 0s and 1s.
· These numbers are stored onto recording media such as magnetic tape, hard drive, optical drive or solid state memory.
Playback
· The sequence of numbers is transmitted from storage into a digital-to-analogue converter (DAC), which converts the numbers back to an analogue signal by sticking together the level information stored in each digital sample, thus rebuilding the original analogue wave form.
·This signal is amplified and transmitted to the loudspeakers.
From above, we can see that there are two main factors affecting the quality of a digital recording:
Word Size
The number of bits used to represent a single audio wave (the word size) directly affects the achievable noise level of a signal recorded with added dither, or the distortion of an undithered signal. Increasing a sample's word length by one bit doubles its possible values, likewise increasing the potential accuracy of each sample and the fidelity of the recording to the original. 24-bit recording is generally considered a current practical limit as this word length allows a signal-to-noise ratio exceeding that of most analogue circuitry, which by necessity must be used in at least two points in the recording/playback chain
Sample rate
The sample rate is even more important a consideration than the word size. If the sample rate is too low, the sampled signal cannot be reconstructed to the original sound signal. Hence the output will be different from the input. The process of under sampling results in aliasing whereby the high frequency components of the sound wave are represented as being lower than they should be. This causes the output wave shape to be severely altered.
To overcome aliasing, the sound signal (or other signal) must be sampled at a rate at least twice that of the highest frequency component in the signal. This is known as the Nyquist-Shannon sampling theorem.
For recording music-quality audio the following PCM sampling rates are the most common:
44.1 kHz 48 kHz 88.2 kHz 96 kHz 176.4 kHz 192 kHz
When making a recording, experienced audio recording and mastering engineers will normally do a master recording at a higher sampling rate (i.e. 88.2, 96, 176.4 or 192 kHz) and then do any editing or mixing at that same higher frequency. High resolution PCM recordings have been released on DVD-Audio (also known as DVD-A), DAD (Digital Audio Disc—which utilises the stereo PCM audio tracks of a regular DVD), DualDisc (utilising the DVD-Audio layer), or Blu-ray (Profile 3.0 is the Blu-ray audio standard, although as of mid-2009 it is unclear whether this will ever really be used as an audio-only format). In addition it is nowadays also possible and common to release a high resolution recording directly as either an uncompressed WAV or lossless compressed FLAC file[8] (usually at 24 bits) without down-converting it .
However if a CD (the CD Red Book standard is 44.1 kHz 16 bit) is to be made from a recording, then doing the initial recording using a sampling rate of 44.1 kHz is obviously one approach. Another approach that is usually preferred is to use a higher sample rate and then downsample to the final format's sample rate. This is usually done as part of the mastering process. One advantage to the latter approach is that way a high resolution recording can be released, as well as a CD and/or lossy compressed file such as mp3—all from the same master recording.- Wikipedia

Now that the theory has been covered by Wikipedia, I’ll continue.
Personally, I couldn’t disagree more with the idea of mp3 files as the accepted standard of audio distribution. This is because, despite the inherent benefits of these highly compressed files, such as the ability to store tens of songs in the place of just one lossless “CD-quality” audio file, the algorithm used to compress them to this extent is flawed, and I feel somewhat disingenuous.

This is because it uses what is known a “lossy” compression method. This means that data is actually discarded from the original file in order to achieve optimal size. It does this by using a technique called perceptual coding, which discards or reduces the precision of sound components less audible to human hearing, and then records the remaining information in a fairly efficient manner. At the standard sample rates of 128, 256 and 320 kbps, the result is a file which on the face of it sounds almost identical to the original. It will almost certainly not be distinguishable through the average stock iPod headphones. However, on closer inspection through a decent setup and professional quality headphones or speakers, many files will begin to show differences. The files can often sound very synthetic, and have their very own signature sound. In fact, many actually prefer the distinctive punchy sound the compression can produce, and more still simply cannot tell the two apart.

The degree to which the compression method harms the original file can depend on the genre of the music, its complexity and the standard to which it was produced to begin with. For example, modern electronic music will often respond better than classical full orchestra piece. 

Beyond this perceived audible difference of each file though, is the matter of principle. After the artists have worked tirelessly in the studio to perform every second of a song to perfection, the raw recording is passed on to a very clever and talented professional who will spend days, weeks, or months tweaking every frequency and channel to a level suitable to complement each element of the piece to the best of their ability. As a result, I feel that to then take this hard work and expertise and soil it by discarding roughly an 1/11th of the data, altering the EQ with gimmicks like “bass-boost”, and then proceed to listen to it through headphones with the audio response of two potatoes connected with some rusty fence wire, is simply wrong. 

I’ll admit though, until roughly 4 years ago, I had never really questioned “lossy” compression or audio quality in general. I would rip all my CDs in the default compression method of a player and listen to it through my mp3 players bundled plastic soul destroyers. The changing point was when I tried my older brother’s Sennheiser HD 25 1 II headphones. These are pretty much regarded worldwide as the standard for professional sound monitoring. Unlike many headphones, they produce a very precise, flat response with controlled treble, defined mid and tight bass, thus meaning that the recording will sound almost exactly as the artist intended. Even connected to my old 1 GB Zen Stone, I was astounded by just how different my music sounded. Of course, being the naïve teenager I was, the first thing I noticed was the bass; something which most standard in-ear buds struggle to produce faithfully. I listened through all my favourite songs, falling in love quickly with the new, more dynamic sound; I was smitten. Eventually I got hold of a pair for myself, and it wasn’t long before their clean and precise response had me noticing the flaws in the mp3 files, and my entire library of music was re-ripped in a lossless format. 

I’ve been through many different lossless file types: like WAV (the audio equivalent of a bitmap image file), FLAC (a lossless compression which uses a clever algorithm to compress audio data to around half its original size without loss of data), and now ALAC (Apple’s version of FLAC). I currently own a 160 Gb iPod Classic which is around 2/3 full of music encoded in lossless ALAC, which drives my HD 25s. When I buy an album now, I can be sure that I’m hearing it as it was intended to be heard, as and I honestly cannot see why anyone who truly loves music would do otherwise.

Of course, this is just my opinion, and while many may agree with me, many more will disagree with me. I’m not trying to brainwash you or to tell you that you’re wrong to use mp3s, or standard in-ear buds. I’m merely suggesting that you try the alternative, if you can. The series director of Pokemon Junichi Masuda announced two brand new Pokémon games coming to the Nintendo DS on a Japanese morning TV show Pokémon Smash!
These two games are Pokemon Black and White 2.


Fans are shocked that Gamefreak (Developers of the Pokémon series) have made a direct sequel to Pokémon Black and White. This has never been done before, every Pokémon game so far has either been a new generation, a third title with slight differences or a remake. The only game to come close to being a sequel is the second generation (Silver and Gold). [SPOILER ALERT] Which had Kanto, the region from the first generation games, as an unlockable island after the Elite 4.


The decision to develop for the Nintendo DS instead of the 3DS is unexpected. This game would be a huge system seller but the userbase for the DS is already over 100 million compared to the 3DS' user base which has yet to reach 20 million globally. However Nintendo did confirm that the two titles would have DSi and 3DS exclusive features for fans playing on these systems.


Looks like fans will be trying to catch them all again soon, the games are set to release later in the year worldwide.

GAME is the UK's leading video game retailer and is owned by the parent company Game Group, who also own the second biggest video game retailer in the UK; Gamestation.
Back when the Playstation Vita was about to launch in late February, Game UK announced that they would not be stocking any Ubisoft PS Vita launch titles. (Rayman Origins and Michael Jackson: The Experience) Game later started stocking Ubisoft launch titles on Feb 28th
One week later Game UK announced that they are cancelling all pre-orders for Last Story, a highly anticipated RPG for the Nintendo Wii platform. They also said that they won't be stocking Mario Party 9 or any EA game released after SSX including the one of the most anticipated games of the year: Mass Effect 3.


This is a very strange thing to happen to one of the biggest gaming retailers in the UK. According to Eurogamer Game UK have lost credit insurance with many of their agencies. Meaning Game have to pay upfront for new stock and If game don't have the funds then they can't stock the title as they don't have the insurance to back them up should they not be able to sell all the new copies. Due to these recent announcements from Game Group,Their shares dropped down by 15% from 5.75p to 4.94p on 29th February 2012. 


This is not good news for Game, following their decision to close dozens of shops last year Game Group's future is not looking bright. 
Will we see Game UK go out of business anytime soon? Only time will tell.

Ubisoft have released the box art for the latest upcoming title in the Assassin's Creed series: Assassin's Creed III


While not officially announced it would appear that the game's setting is based around the American Revolution period of history. Assassin's Creed III has been set a release date of October 30th 2012 for North America. The game is expected to arrive in Europe and Australia Late October or Early November.
